# Characters

Save and reuse a character reference in Ideogram 3.0 Character. Create a named reference from one photo, adjust its preservation mask, and find images made with that saved character.

Save a character once and reuse it in the **Ideogram 3.0 Character** app when that app is available in your workspace. Open **Library** → **Characters** to see your saved references. Selecting a character card opens the images made with that character.

If the Character app is unavailable, or you want to guide **Ideogram 4.5** with several reference images, see [Keep a character consistent](/create/reference-images.md#keep-a-character-consistent).

## Create a character

1. Open **Library** → **Characters** and select **Create character**.
2. Enter a **Name**, or keep the suggested name. The randomize button suggests another.
3. Attach one image with **Upload**, **Library** or **Camera**, or drag an image into the upload area. For best results, use a centered, front-facing character against a simple background.
4. Select **Create**.

The character appears in your saved list. Creating the reference does not generate a new scene. Both a nonempty name and one selected image are required before **Create** is available.

## Use a saved character

1. In **Library** → **Characters**, hover over a character card and select **Use**. On a touch screen, tap the card's **Use** button.
2. The **Ideogram 3.0 Character** app opens with the saved character selected.
3. Describe the new scene, choose your settings and select **Generate**. Check the credit quote on the button before running.

You can also open the **Ideogram 3.0 Character** app from the catalog and select the plus button under **Character** to choose a saved reference or create one. Removing the reference from the app's input clears it for that run; it does not delete the saved character.

## Find a character's images

Select the character's card in **Library** → **Characters**. Its page shows images generated with that saved character, rather than every image that happens to depict the same person. A newly saved character can have an empty results page until you generate with it. Use the character switcher at the top to choose another, or the back arrow to return to the list.

## Edit or delete a character

1. In **Library** → **Characters**, open the card's **…** menu and select **Edit**.
2. Change its **Name**, then select **Save**. If you made no name change, the button reads **Done**.

The image preview also has a mask-edit button for adjusting the character mask. To delete the saved character, select **Delete** in the edit dialog and confirm the warning.

### Adjust a character's preservation mask

1. Open the character's **…** menu → **Edit**.
2. Select the mask-edit icon on its image preview.
3. In **Edit Mask**, erase red areas to reveal more of the face you want to preserve.
4. Select **Save edits**, or **Cancel** to discard the mask changes.

This is a reference mask for the saved character, rather than an inpainting mask that describes an area to replace. If **Failed to save character masks** appears, reopen the editor and try saving again; do not assume that the changed mask was saved.

Deleting a saved character requires **Confirm** and cannot be undone. To choose a different character for just one run, clear the app's selected reference instead of deleting it from Library.
