# Describing Body Type

Neutral words for body type, build and shape to use when you prompt for people.

Body shape matters as much as age or clothing when you prompt for a person. Pick a base term, then add one or two visual details.

## Builds

* **Slim:** slim build, slender, narrow shoulders, long limbs, light frame
* **Average:** average build, medium frame, everyday proportions
* **Athletic:** athletic build, toned arms and legs, strong core, swimmer's build, runner's build
* **Muscular:** muscular build, broad shoulders, defined arms and chest, bodybuilder physique
* **Curvy:** curvy figure, full hips, defined waist, hourglass shape
* **Plus-size:** plus-size, full figure, soft and rounded build, wide frame
* **Large:** large build, heavyset, broad and heavy frame
* **Tall and lean:** lanky, tall and thin, wiry frame, long arms and legs
* **Stocky:** stocky build, short and broad, solid frame, wide chest
* **Androgynous:** androgynous build, straight silhouette, minimal curves

## Tips

* **Combine with pose and clothing.** "A plus-size woman in a fitted green dress, standing confidently" gives the model the body, the fit and the attitude.
* **Describe the frame you want shown.** Body details below the waist pull the framing out to a full-length shot. See [Describe only what should show](/prompting/refine-and-iterate.md#describe-only-what-should-show).
* **Keep it specific, not judgmental.** Words like "toned", "broad" or "soft" describe a shape. Loaded words tend to give exaggerated or caricatured results.

## Examples

> * A full-length photo of a stocky older man with a short grey beard, wearing a work jacket
> * A slim dancer with long limbs, mid-leap in a studio
> * A plus-size model in a linen suit, walking down a city street
