# Edit Images

Choose Precise Edit, Remix or Studio to edit an AI image or uploaded photo. Learn what each action changes, how Recreate differs, and why a button may be unavailable.

You can edit photos you upload as well as images you make: restore an old photo, change the background, swap clothing or colors, or fix one detail. Ideogram gives you three ways to change an image. The buttons on the image page are quickest. Studio is for layered work, step by step. Single-purpose apps each do one job with more control.

## Buttons on the image page

Open any image to see its page. These buttons sit under it. You need to be signed in to use them.

* **Edit** opens the **Precise Edit** app with your image loaded. See [Edit an image with Precise Edit](#edit-an-image-with-precise-edit).
* **Remove BG** opens the Background Remover app with your image. See [Remove Backgrounds and Objects](/edit/remove-backgrounds-and-objects.md).
* **Upscale** opens the Upscale app with your image. See [Upscale](/edit/upscale.md).
* **Recreate** restores the recorded inputs for a supported generated image in its original app, so you can run it again or tweak it. It does not appear on uploads or generations whose inputs cannot be restored.
* **Open in app** lets you pick any app and opens it with your image.
* **Use as source** shows only when you already have an app open. It sends the image to that app.

### Recreate, Remix or Edit?

These actions start from different information:

* **Recreate** restores the generation's recorded prompt and settings. Choose it to adjust an earlier run. Opening Recreate does not start another generation; review the restored inputs and run the app when you're ready.
* **Remix** uses the finished image as its source. Choose it to make a variation with a new prompt and control how much of the source to keep. See [Remix](/edit/remix.md).
* **Edit** loads the finished image into Precise Edit. Choose it to describe a change, such as replacing a background or changing an object. Add a mask when the change should stay in one area.

For example, to change the subject in a prompt you used earlier, start with **Recreate**. To explore a different visual treatment of the finished image, use **Remix**. To remove a sign from that image while keeping the rest, use **Edit** and mask the sign.

### If an action is unavailable

Sign in first and let the image finish loading. A button also depends on whether the image supports that action and whether the app is available in your workspace. **Recreate** needs restorable generation inputs, so it may be absent on an older result even though you can still download or edit the image. Try **Open in app** to use the finished image as a source in an available app instead.

### Edit an image with Precise Edit

1. Open the image.
2. Select **Edit**. The **Precise Edit** app opens with your image loaded.

3. Under **What should change?**, describe the change, like "make the sky orange".
4. Click **Apply edit**. The button shows the cost.

Precise Edit uses Ideogram 4.5 and keeps the image's exact size. You can add up to 4 reference images without a mask, or 3 with one. You can also choose Quality and Number of images; see [Precise Edit settings](/edit/masks-and-inpainting.md#precise-edit-settings).

### Change only one area with a mask

Paint a mask on the image to change only that part, such as one object, a face or the background. See [Masks and Inpainting](/edit/masks-and-inpainting.md).

Free accounts can make a limited number of Precise Edit edits. After that, Precise Edit needs a paid plan or bought credits. See [Apps and Workflows](/create/apps.md).

## Studio

[Studio](/edit/studio.md) is Ideogram's editor. In the sidebar's **More** section, select **Studio**. Use it when you need more than one pass at an image:

* Edit one layer and leave the rest alone
* Paint over an area and describe what should change
* Extend the canvas or change its aspect ratio
* Add text layers, or turn text in the image into layers you can edit (see [Text and Layers](/edit/text-and-layers.md))

Studio saves as you go. Every canvas-wide edit adds a new version you can go back to.

## Single-purpose apps

Each app does one job and shows the controls for that job. Open one from **Open in app** on the image page, or from **Apps** in the sidebar.

| App | What it does | Plan |
| ------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| [Remix](/edit/remix.md) | Makes new images based on yours, guided by a prompt. You set how closely they follow it. | Credits (the button shows the cost) |
| [Background Remover](/edit/remove-backgrounds-and-objects.md) | Cuts out the subject and returns a transparent image. No prompt. | Credits (the button shows the cost) |
| [Object Remover](/edit/remove-backgrounds-and-objects.md) | Click, paint or outline an object to remove it. | Credits (the button shows the cost) |
| [Upscale](/edit/upscale.md) | Enlarges the image 2x, 4x or 8x. | Paid plan or bought credits |
| [Precise Edit](/create/apps.md) | Edits with Ideogram 4.5 and keeps the image's exact size. You can mask one part and add reference images. | A few free edits, then a paid plan or bought credits |

The run button in each app shows the cost before you start. See [how credits work](/plans-and-billing/available-plans.md#how-credits-work).
